What is the role of the cooling pad in the evaporative cooling process?

Jul 18, 2025

In an evaporative air cooler, the cooling pad is one of the core components of the entire system. Its main function is to absorb heat from the air through the evaporation of water, thereby achieving air cooling. This process not only improves the comfort of the air, but also provides a good operating environment for the equipment.

1. Basic structure and materials of cooling pads
Cooling pads are usually made of porous materials. Common materials include:

Cellulose materials: such as honeycomb cellulose pads, which have good water absorption and air permeability, can quickly absorb and retain moisture, and promote evaporation.
Wood: such as poplar or beech trees, which are cheaper, but have poor water absorption and short life.
Plastic or synthetic materials: do not absorb water, but have a stable structure and are suitable for dry environments.
The choice of these materials directly affects the performance and service life of the cooling pad.

2. The working principle of the cooling pad in the evaporative cooling process
The process of evaporative cooling can be divided into the following steps:

Air enters the cooler: hot air enters from the outside of the equipment and passes through the surface of the cooling pad.
Water evaporation: The surface of the cooling pad is soaked with water, and the water molecules change from liquid to gas. This process is called evaporation.
Heat absorption: During the evaporation process, water molecules need to absorb heat from the air (i.e., latent heat of evaporation), thereby reducing the air temperature.
Air cooling: The temperature of the air passing through the cooling pad decreases, while the humidity increases, forming a cool air flow.
Air discharge: The cooled air is sent into the room through the fan to provide a comfortable environment.

3. Filtering function of the cooling pad
In addition to the cooling effect, the cooling pad also has a certain filtering function. Due to its porous structure, when the air passes through the cooling pad, larger dust, impurities and particles will be intercepted on the surface of the pad, thereby preventing them from entering the interior of the equipment and protecting the fan and other components from wear and blockage.

4. The impact of the cooling pad on the system efficiency
The performance of the cooling pad directly affects the overall efficiency of the evaporative cooling system. A high-quality cooling pad can:

Improve cooling efficiency: Ensure continuous evaporation of water, thereby more effectively reducing the air temperature.

Prolong the life of the equipment: Through the filtering function, reduce the damage of dust to the fan and motor.
Reduce energy consumption: Efficient cooling pads can reduce the load on the fan, thereby reducing the overall energy consumption of the system.

5. Maintenance and replacement of cooling pads
In order to ensure the long-term stable operation of the cooling pad, regular maintenance is required:

Cleaning: Regularly remove dust and dirt from the surface of the cooling pad to prevent clogging.
Check water quality: Use clean water for cooling to avoid algae and bacteria.
Replacement cycle: Depending on the frequency of use and environmental conditions, the cooling pad generally needs to be replaced every 1-3 years.

6. Applicability of cooling pads in different climatic conditions
The performance of cooling pads varies under different climatic conditions. In dry, low-humidity environments, evaporative cooling works best because water evaporates quickly and the air cools significantly. In high-humidity areas, the effect of evaporative cooling will be weakened due to the high moisture content in the air, so it needs to be used in combination with other cooling methods.

Cooling pads play a vital role in the evaporative cooling process. It not only cools the air through water evaporation, but also plays a role in filtering and protecting equipment. Choosing the right materials, regular maintenance and reasonable use are the key to ensuring the efficient operation of cooling pads.
