What is an evaporative air cooler?

Jun 13, 2025

Evaporative air cooler, also known as "air cooler" or "environmentally friendly air conditioner", is an energy-saving cooling device that uses the principle of water evaporation to absorb heat to cool the air. It reduces the air temperature by absorbing the heat absorbed by the evaporation of water to achieve the purpose of cooling and cooling. Compared with traditional compressor refrigeration and air conditioning, evaporative coolers have simpler structures and lower operating costs, and are more suitable for large spaces with good ventilation.

1. Working principle
The core principle of the evaporative air cooler is "water evaporation absorbs heat". It is equipped with a high-efficiency wet curtain inside. When the fan is running, the external hot air passes through the wet curtain and contacts the water on it. When the water evaporates, it absorbs a lot of heat from the air, so that the air temperature is rapidly reduced, and finally the cooled air is sent out to achieve the effect of cooling and ventilation.

2. Main components
Fan system: used to inhale hot air and send out cold air, usually equipped with a multi-speed wind speed adjustment function.

Water pump system: continuously circulates water to the wet curtain to keep it moist and facilitate continuous evaporation.

Wet curtain/cooling pad: It has the ability to evaporate water over a large area and is a key component for cooling effect.

Water tank: It stores circulating water, and the capacity directly affects the use time.

Control system: It can be mechanical or remote control, used to adjust wind speed, switch and other functions.

3. Product advantages
Energy saving and environmental protection: No compressor refrigeration, energy consumption is only 1/10 of air conditioning, and the operating cost is low.

Air humidification: By evaporating water, the air humidity can be increased in a dry environment to improve comfort.

Ventilation: Fresh air can be introduced to keep indoor air circulation, which helps to improve air quality.

Simple structure and easy installation: No need to install an external unit, suitable for open or semi-open spaces.

Wide range of applicable scenarios: suitable for homes, offices, shops, factories, warehouses, outdoor places and other places.

4. Precautions

Evaporative coolers are more effective in high temperature and dry environments, and excessive humidity will affect the cooling efficiency.

Wet curtains and water tanks need to be replaced or cleaned regularly to prevent bacterial growth.

It does not have the ability to compress and refrigerate refrigerants. The temperature reduction range is usually around 5℃~10℃, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity.

What are the recommended use scenarios for evaporative air coolers?
Evaporative air coolers are very suitable for space cooling and ventilation in open or semi-enclosed environments due to their energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and no need for complex installation.

1. Industrial and commercial places
(1). Factory workshops

Usually they have large spaces, many equipment, and high heat generation. Traditional air conditioners have poor cooling effects and high costs.

Evaporative air coolers can quickly provide a large amount of cold air, improve the working environment, and increase employee comfort and work efficiency.

(2). Warehouses and logistics centers

These places have frequent entry and exit, poor sealing, and low air conditioning efficiency.

Evaporative coolers can take into account both ventilation and cooling to keep indoor air fresh.

(3). Large supermarkets, exhibitions, and showrooms

There are dense crowds and the air is easily stuffy.

The cooler can not only cool down, but also keep the air flowing, improving the customer experience.

2. Commercial and service places

(1). Restaurants, kitchens

Kitchens are full of oil smoke and high temperatures, and conventional air conditioners are easily polluted by oil smoke.

Evaporative coolers are resistant to oil stains and easy to clean, suitable for high-temperature environments in kitchens.

(2). Beauty salons, gyms

Customers have high requirements for air comfort and need to keep the air fresh and flowing.

Coolers can enhance air flow and reduce the feeling of stuffiness.

(3). Temporary stalls, outdoor commercial activities

Movable coolers are convenient and flexible, suitable for temporary occasions such as summer outdoor markets, trade fairs, night markets, etc.

3. Public places and facilities

(1). Waiting rooms, waiting rooms, school auditoriums

Large spaces and concentrated crowds require air circulation and appropriate cooling.

Evaporative coolers are energy-saving alternatives that reduce operating costs.

(2). Religious places, community activity centers

There is a clear demand for ventilation and cooling, but air conditioning facilities are often lacking.

Using a cooler can quickly improve environmental comfort.

4. Home and personal use
(1). Living room, balcony, open kitchen

Easy to use, plug in and run, suitable for daily cooling.

More energy-efficient than air conditioning, and less likely to cause "air conditioning disease".

(2). Yard, terrace, garage

Outdoor activity spaces in summer require a certain cooling method.

Mobile air coolers can provide local cooling and enhance the home living experience.

5. Breeding and agricultural scenes
(1). Livestock farms, breeding houses

High temperatures in summer affect the health and growth of livestock.

Evaporative coolers can effectively reduce the temperature in the house and maintain air humidity.

(2). Greenhouses, agricultural product processing workshops

Proper temperature and humidity control is conducive to crop growth and product quality assurance.
