How to Solve Odor Problems in Air Coolers?

Jan 23, 2026

In hot summer environments, air coolers (also known as evaporative air coolers or eco-friendly air conditioners) are the preferred cooling equipment for many factories, warehouses, and commercial premises. However, many users find that after the equipment has been running for a while, the air outlet emits an unpleasant "earthy" or musty smell. This not only affects the working experience of employees but may also reduce indoor air quality.

I. Tracing the Source: Why Do Air Coolers Produce Odors?

To solve the problem, we must first find the source. Odors in air coolers are usually caused by the following factors:

  • Deterioration of water quality: If the water tank is not cleaned for a long time, the stagnant water will breed bacteria, algae, and microorganisms, producing a putrid odor.

  • Accumulation of dirt on the wet curtain (evaporative filter): The wet curtain is the core component of the air cooler. It absorbs dust, smoke, and pollen from the air for a long time. If not cleaned promptly, it is highly susceptible to mold growth when damp.

  • Long-term shutdown without draining: During seasonal changes or periods of disuse, the water remaining in the pipes and pump body deteriorates.

  • Environmental factors: There are odor sources at the external air intake (such as garbage dumps, chemical plant exhaust, etc.), which are sucked in and dispersed by the equipment.

II. Core Steps to Solve Air Cooler Odor Problems

1. Deep Cleaning of the Wet Curtain and Water Tank

This is the most direct way to eliminate odors. It is recommended to regularly remove the side panels of the air cooler, take out the wet curtain, and rinse it with a low-pressure water hose. For equipment with severe odors, a neutral cleaning agent can be used for scrubbing, and the water tank should be thoroughly cleaned.

2. Regularly Activating the Automatic Cleaning Function

Most high-quality air coolers on the market now have an "automatic cleaning" function. It is recommended to set the system to automatically change the circulating water every 4-8 hours, depending on the dust concentration in the working environment. Maintaining clean water is key to preventing odor production.

3. "Drying" Treatment After Shutdown

This is a small trick that many users overlook. Before turning off the machine at the end of the day, turn off the water pump first, and let the fan continue to run for 5-10 minutes to dry the wet curtain inside the air cooler. Keeping the wet curtain dry effectively inhibits mold growth.

4. Water Purification and Sterilization

Add specialized air cooler disinfectant and sterilizing agents to the water tank, or install UV sterilization lamps and water filtration devices to block the growth of bacteria at the source.

III. Prevention is Better Than Cure: Purchase and Maintenance Suggestions

  • Installation Location: Ensure the air intake is away from pollution sources to guarantee that fresh outdoor air is drawn in.
  • Seasonal Maintenance: Before long-term shutdown in winter, be sure to drain all accumulated water and perform a comprehensive cleaning and maintenance of the entire unit.

Solving air cooler odor problems is not difficult; the key is "frequent cleaning, using clean water, and keeping it dry." As a professional air cooler manufacturer, we recommend that users establish a scientific maintenance system. This will not only keep the indoor air fresh and pleasant but also effectively extend the service life of the equipment and reduce operating costs.
